Swedish VAT number (momsnummer) – format and converter
Enter a Swedish organisationsnummer (company registration number) to get the VAT number.
Observera: rätt format betyder inte att företaget är momsregistrerat. Kontrollera registreringen hos Skatteverket eller i EU:s VIES-tjänst.
The format: SE + 10 digits + 01
In Sweden, the VAT registration number is called momsregistreringsnummer, usually shortened to momsnummer. It is not a separate random identifier – it is built directly from the company's organisationsnummer, the ten-digit registration number assigned to every Swedish legal entity.
A Swedish VAT number always has fourteen characters. It starts with the country code SE, followed by the ten digits of the organisationsnummer without the hyphen, and ends with 01. A company with organisationsnummer 556123-4567 therefore has the VAT number SE556123456701. The trailing 01 is a sequence number added by the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket); for Swedish businesses it is in practice always 01.
Sole traders (enskild firma) do not have a separate organisationsnummer. Instead, the owner's personal identity number (personnummer) in ten-digit form is used, with the same SE prefix and 01 suffix.
Format is not the same as registration
The last digit of the organisationsnummer is a check digit calculated with the Luhn algorithm, so the converter above can catch typos. A correctly formatted number does not prove that the business is actually registered for VAT, though. To confirm an active registration, use the VIES check button, which queries the European Commission's VAT Information Exchange System, or contact Skatteverket.
